HYPOTONIC DOUBLE CONTRAST DUODENOGRAPHY WITHOUT INTUBATION

Abstract
|
|
|
The hypotonic duodenography is defined as a pharmacoradiological examination of the duodenum which has been made temporarily aperistaltic under the influence of a spasmolytic or anticholinergic agent. The technique originally described by Liotta and employed by many others requires a duodenal intubation. In order to obviate the unpleasant and time-consuming procedure of tubing, a "tubeless" method has been developed by us. This duodenography can be carried out whenever necessity arises during conventional upper gastrointestinal examination. We have used Buscopan as an anti-cholinergic preparation and an effervescent agent as the source of gas.
The material consisted of 21 cases with various diseases of the duodeno-pancreatico-biliary system.
The stress has been placed on the observation of the major papilla in varied conditions as well as in normal status. One patient with an impacted common duct stone showed a rather conspicuous swelling of the papilla major. A typical "e" sign was demonstrated only in the hypotonic duodenogram in some cases with pancreatic head lesions. In none of the 220 cases so far examined by us, untoward reactions were noted or reported after the intravenous injection of usual doses of Buscopan.
